Alejandro Barzaga, a fashion designer based in Miami and originally from Cuba, has embarked on an exciting journey in the fashion world. His passion began when he bought a sewing machine and learned from online tutorials.

Inspired by Rory Duffy, a tailor in England, Alejandro started experimenting with fabrics and sewing techniques. He later studied at the Miami International University of Art & Design, where he developed his skills in pattern-making and textile sourcing.

After graduating, Alejandro realized he couldn’t find anyone in Miami who shared his vision for tailoring. This led him to open his own studio with his wife just six months ago. Their fresh approach centers on Alejandro’s focus on structure, storytelling, and contrast—three key elements that define his brand.

Crafting a Narrative through Fashion

At Barzaga, the brand isn’t just about clothing; it offers an experience. It presents a reality that may not be your own but one you can inhabit the moment you choose. It’s like stepping into a well-crafted tale, where the protagonist is anyone who dares to embrace the possibilities offered. Each piece in Alejandro’s collection carries meaning.

He believes that every detail, from the vintage buttons to the stitching, tells a story. The idea of contrast is particularly important to him, reflecting the identity of his hometown, where crabs symbolize beauty in unexpected forms. For Alejandro, weaving together different elements—much like a crab navigating its surroundings— is central to his designs.

11: Insurrection Ommatidium

Barzaga’s first collection, “Insurrection Ommatidium,” features clothing made from 100% dead stock fabrics, all handmade in Miami by Alejandro Barzaga. This collection is inspired by the American and Spanish revolutions, relating to the struggle for Cuban independence. It highlights themes of loss and shared humanity, reminding us that we all experience similar joys and pains.

A Blend of Structure and Emotion

Alejandro’s creative process is careful and detailed. He uses unique techniques, such as cutting patterns from men’s sizes to create silhouettes that suggest strength and power. The colors he chooses, like the blue and white reminiscent of Spanish military uniforms, connect to the historical themes of his work. Alejandro aims to produce garments that not only look beautiful but also inspire respect and admiration for the wearer. “I want my clothes to make people feel strong,” he says. “Every detail is intentional and reflects my experiences, aiming to empower women.”

A Vision for the Future

At the heart of Barzaga’s endeavors are enduring values that inspire the brand to break free from conventional boundaries and exceed expectations. Alejandro plans to explore deeper themes in his future collections, experimenting with fabrics and shapes to push the limits of traditional fashion. As Alejandro prepares to launch his first collection, he offers valuable advice for aspiring designers: “Keep following your passion. Understand who you are and stay connected to your surroundings. Every small step brings you closer to your goals.” His journey highlights the importance of resilience and storytelling in fashion, reminding us that every piece of clothing has a story waiting to be shared.
