At the intersection of art, fashion, and Guaraní culture, “Palabras Alma” (Soul Words) was born, a unique proposal transforming the catwalk into visual poetry. Created by students of the Fashion Design and Management Program at the Universidad Privada de Santa Cruz de la Sierra (UPSA), Bolivia, this photographic production is not only a display of emerging talent but a celebration of fashion as a form of artistic expression and a vehicle for cultural connection.
A Creative Showcase
The exhibition, which took place at the emblematic Manzana Uno in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, a historical and cultural center, brought together the creations of 60 students in a show open to the public between September 20 and November 10, 2024. Under the direction of prominent educators and experts, this platform allowed young designers to showcase their creativity. It connected them with the vibrant local and regional market dynamics, leaving a significant mark on the South American fashion scene.
An Educational & Cultural Legacy
Since its founding in 2004, UPSA’s Fashion Design and Management Program has been a pioneer in Bolivia, establishing itself as the country’s only one of its kind. This program, supported by the prestigious Research Center of the European Institute of Design (CRIED) in Milan, Italy, has managed to blend European sophistication with Bolivian cultural roots, creating a unique educational and cultural legacy. This blend has attracted students from all regions of the country, intrigued by the innovative approach and commitment to excellence.
The visionary leadership of figures such as Lauren Müller de Pacheco, Marion Schulmeyer, Raquel Clouzet, and a team of renowned teachers have been instrumental in this achievement. Their innovative approach and unwavering commitment to excellence have positioned UPSA as a benchmark in fashion education nationally and in South America. This commitment to excellence is evident in the quality and impact of the Palabras Alma exhibition.
The Garment Narrative
“Palabras Alma” goes beyond aesthetics. Inspired by the essential and sacred value the Guaraní people give the word, the exhibition reimagines fashion as a three-dimensional language. Each piece is a dynamic poem that flows with the body’s movement, becoming a living sculpture that connects the natural and the technological, the authentic and the constructed.
The exhibition invites viewers to read, feel, and decipher the stories woven into each texture, volume, and silhouette. The garments, conceived as extensions of the soul, are more than objects; they are tangible narratives that capture the tensions and aspirations of a specific time and place.
Palabras Alma is not just an editorial; it is a statement. It is a reminder that fashion is more than fabric and design: identity, culture, and soul. And in this show, UPSA does not just present fashion; it forges a legacy.
