Baro Lucas and the Garden of Earthly Delights

Baro Lucas took Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights to Madrid Fashion Week and pushed his minimalism somewhere more surreal. The collection plays with purity and excess through sculptural pieces in silk taffeta, tarlatan and cool wools, in a palette of pastel pink, coral, petrol blue and black. The show opened in yellow, then moved through a red to black rhythm that tied every look together. It closed with a pastel pink cape dress, gathered half a meter above the hem, that you keep thinking about afterwards.

Winner of the Maison Pyramide award for his collection “110dB”, Álvaro Lucas Santos is this week’s safe bet. The fun one, the always admired one. His label Baro Lucas has managed to capture the public’s attention in a special way over the last few years, and I think that has a lot to do with the exquisiteness of his proposals, always.

Now, at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, he has once again delighted us with his collection EXTASE SPRING 2027, a different inspiration drawn from the delirious and hypnotic world of Bosch’s masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Purity and Excess

A proposal offering different readings of the body, through which he finds a more surreal dimension within his classic minimalist language. Pieces built from architectural, playful patterns that give the space a dreamlike atmosphere.

Lucas plays with duality, with purity and excess, innocence and seduction, the divine and the human, fullness and decadence, all of it through clean, bold, and sculptural pieces. Lightness and volume in the fabrics seem to be the fundamental pillars of every show this week, and by extension of next season. Pieces that resemble and dress the body in a harmonious, respectful way.

Silk taffetas, triacetates, tarlatan, cool wools and felts are the materials behind Lucas’s proposal. Meanwhile, the color palette, primary, earthy and mineral, brings together shades typical of classical painting such as pastel pink, coral and clover green, adorned at its fullest with deeper choices like petrol blue, pearl grey, deep red, ivory white and, of course, black.

Ending on Pink

The show opened with 4 looks in yellow with touches of pistachio green, a colour that, unlike what we usually see in SS collections every year, does not seem to be the star of the week this time. The show followed a fairly distinctive pattern: if three red looks came out and the fourth was red and black, the following looks would be black. A way of foreshadowing what had been coming the whole time. A very clever way of making the entire show cohesive, an open conversation, a canvas that always felt fresh.

The show closed with a pastel pink dress styled like a cape or tunic, with astonishing, sculptural volume and gathers set half a meter above the hem that set the silhouette apart, making it a memorable piece, one of those pieces you later remember as a truly great closing look.
