O’Barret is a fashion house that operates at the intersection of couture, art, and experimental visual storytelling. There is nothing more delightful than a designer who understands how to frame and express their feelings through design.

Although the label is heavily linked to the Spanish fashion scene, the brand’s main headquarters and creative design workshops are based in Milan, Italy. Alicia Jiménez Barreto is O’Barret’s founder and creative director. After studying Fashion Design at IADE in Madrid and earning a Master’s degree in Fashion Design from NABA in Milan, she gained further professional experience in New York before settling in Milan, where she currently designs.

A second skin

Her work relies on identity and nostalgia for its inspiration. Alicia draws from her Andalusian and Colombian heritage as she creates clothing where tradition and experimentation coexist. Through garments, materials, and objects, she translates elements of her personal world into creations that preserve and reinterpret her memories. The name “O’Barret” playfully reuses her second surname, Barreto, into a fun global moniker. The brand name embodies Alicia’s desire to transform her personal history into a contemporary brand.

The new collection is called “Soulstice” and emerges from the union of the words “soul” and “solstice.” Alicia is referencing an astronomical phenomenon as a metaphor for the cycles of human transformation. The collection interprets the designs as a reference for when an identity leaves the comfort of a familiar form to make way for another, more advanced state of being. “Soulstice” views transformation as an ongoing process of expansion, introspection, and rebirth.
“Soulstice” explores how fluid silhouettes can coexist with sculptural forms that alternate between protecting and liberating the body. Braided elements, layers, and meticulously crafted textures form a “second skin,” where the very act of manipulating the fabrics and materials can represent how a person challenges themselves, transforms for the better, and is reborn.

Fashion doesn't know about binary

The collection eschews traditional gender binaries and is meant to be fluid. There is always a danger in making unisex clothes since, for many designers, the resulting designs fall into a cliched pastiche of avant-garde. But O’Barret  O’Barret Soulstice collection avoids this pitfall through its intelligent draping, low-slung waistlines, and exposed midriffs. By treating the male and female form with indifference and using an organic color scheme, the collection feels highly progressive and intentionally provocative.

The palette is dominated by an atmospheric collection of rich earth tones, deep clays, terracottas, and mineral shades. It evokes a connection to the constantly changing seasons and, of course, the human experience.

The second outfit down the runway was a two-piece ensemble featuring a cropped bomber-style jacket and low-slung, wide-leg trousers, showcasing a rich, vintage-inspired jacquard and damask upholstery textiles. The top was especially thrilling with its blouson-style and heavily gathered, elasticized hemline designed to sit high above the natural waist, exposing the midriff. It was elegant and sexy. The trousers were relaxed, fluid, with wide legs. The model showcased the slouchy, straight-cut drape with an insouciance that is only to be admired. The colors balanced golds, deep ochres, and muted olive-bronze tones set against a crisp cream base.

Slow, circular and bold

A later outfit made me gasp in wonder, and it was not only the male model’s glorious chest. This unisex bohemian design featured a cropped floral velvet jacket and wide-leg culotte trousers, styled with structured leather accessories. The top was also a blouson-style cropped bomber jacket similar to the previous design that I described. Except this jacket took sensuality to a new level by completely exposing the midriff and chest. The hemline sat high, anchored by an elasticized, gathered waistband. The colors were lustrous devoré with a champagne-beige base. It featured a soft, romantic tapestry-style floral print consisting of muted terracotta-rose buds and sage-green leaves. The trousers were relaxed-fit, cropped culottes with sharp vertical pleating at the waist, adding structured volume before flowing into a leg that hit just above the ankle.

As an emerging avant-garde fashion house, O’Barret is intentionally avoiding traditional commercial expansion, choosing instead to focus on slow-fashion capsule releases. What is also fascinating and admirable is that the brand focuses on a zero-waste circular supply chain. O.Barret is formalizing agreements with local European textile reclamation firms and vintage interior suppliers to source rare, historical textiles like damask drapery and vintage carpets. Thus, the brand turns forgotten memories into luxury gender-fluid statement pieces. Avessa loves experimentation, and O’Barret’s Soulstice collection is unafraid to be bold, beautiful, and conscious, transforming fabulous clothes from memories and stories of the human spirit.
