Did I just take crazy pills? Did a cosmic-level tragedy, similar to the killing fields, just take place? Did I just leave the house with soiled underpants and no trousers?
No. Trump, a con artist since the 1970s, a narcissist, and a cunning marketer, just won the presidency. Should there have been shock? Should the liberal elites have been surprised and wet themselves? Absolutely not!! This was imminently predictable. And if you, dear reader, had been paying attention? Avessa predicted it with aplomb and, okay, perhaps a tad bit of loftiness in the Summer 2023 article “Lost Dreams.”
AVESSA prides itself on an uncompromising view of fashion and the world that imposes itself on what we wear and what we buy. “Lost Dreams” comprehensively warned that life is not fraught-less for the thoughtless. There are 100 million people yearning to recover their dreams lost to the unpredictable economy and rushing cultural shifts that rock even the willing.
White working-class people have been spit upon and manipulated for centuries since the inception of the United States. And the rest of us, educated, white, black, brown, purple, and polka-dotted, sneered and thought that it was our time. We thought the white working class didn’t matter anymore and that they should have the decency to step aside. But it is supremely unfair for so many people to be shoved aside and with arrogance and told to shut up.
There is no doubt that women, African Americans, immigrants, and the LGBQT community haven’t been served punch and pie these past couple hundred years either, but all of us live and die in this country together, whether we wish to acknowledge it or not. We are reaping the rewards of our society’s arrogance and disinterest in helping all of us.
All of us.
John Dickerson wrote the phrase “United we stand, divided we fall” in 1768 as a patriotic reminder to the thirteen original colonies. Yet? In 2024 we elected someone who would have appalled the saint like Abraham Lincoln as well as the selfless George Washington.
AVESSA pointed out the economic and societal dangers we played within the last 8 years. If we cared to pay the slightest attention, we could easily have understood the rise of Trump and even the importance of Vance as a future danger. No one can predict what the mercurial and potentially ludicrous Trump will harm. Our hope is that he sits fat and bulbous, smiling joyously and eating burnt steaks and beautiful pieces of chocolate cake.
The election is past, and there is no gain in continuing to mourn or suspiciously look at your neighbors, wondering who they voted for. Instead, we need to accept the reasons why not only working-class white people voted for Trump but also why young men of all races, white women, Latinos, and others voted for him.
There is a valid, if extremely dangerous, reason why most of us decided to forgive Trump’s felonious and sexist acts. It’s because all of these people are fed up with the status quo, traditional conservatism, and the direction of the opposing Democratic Party.
These voters want the place to burn. If the future looks to have few options for improvement for poor whites and other Trump voters, then the words “Fuck the rich” have greater meaning.
But as always in Trumpland, the brazen lies are already being exposed. Frankly, it’s bizarre, smug billionaires bros are lining up to join the new presidential cabinet and are gleefully ready to commit breathtaking acts of corruption. And ironically, these same billionaires are drooling themselves as they start to eliminate the very services and support that the white working class depends on.
Even more hysterical is that Trump has threatened war with Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Denmark Prior to taking office. Wait, though, Denmark? I thought they were the happiest people on earth who considered visiting America akin to watching drunk capuchin monkeys gorge themselves on McDonald’s?
In any event, the future will be delirious and frenetic. I have my 10-kilo bottle of Xanax at my bedside. So bring it on.
It is imperative for our society to ignore the circus swirling around us and finally… finally pay attention to the underlying cause of this goat rodeo. In other words, we have to stop punishing each other and blaming each other for real and imagined wrongs. We need to be united and help each other. And forgive. Forgive past mistakes no matter how deeply the insults are felt and the anger is justified.
We are running into uncharted territory. Global war? Economic disaster? Civil unrest? Or just the stock market defying gravity as businesses are let loose to unregulated capitalism. For billionaires to dictate if the rest of us, including poor rural whites, work or starve?
Educating ourselves on white rage and voter indifference is foundational for peering into the unknown and perhaps guiding us to change our behavior and, as stated before… to forgive.
Recovering from an obsession with Italian-designed menswear, Alfonso decided to take a deeper look into women’s fashion to see how our relationship among clothing, society, and business has changed. Educated as an economist with an MBA, he travels between Chicago, Miami, and Mexico on a search to see what happens next to fashion.
