A cheerful and congratulatory toast and clink of glasses – the universal, jolly song followed by blowing out candles – the counting down from ten and the melodious ringing in of the new year. And of course – a PARTYYY! So many ways that we celebrate life’s beautiful moments.
So, what better way to celebrate AVESSA’s 5-year anniversary than with a disco roller skate party? The dazzling shimmers of light dancing and reflecting onto faces, on the floor, and around the room; the rapturous applause and celebratory roar of a festive crowd rolling and dancing to fun and lively beats; sequins glittering and glistening joining in with silent and jubilant hollers of delight. So much nostalgia and joy.

Doesn’t roller skating just bring you joy?
OK, falling was never fun but honestly, I never remember that part. I just remember those wonderful moments with my friends going round and round laughing and feeling the whoosh of the wind brush against my face and through my hair. The crisscross of legs going in and out, skating backwards, forwards and watching others do tricks. The dance worthy songs and the songs that you can always count on to get your feet moving.
What do you remember about roller skating? The familiar tune of Petula Clark’s “Downtown”? “When you’re alone and life is making you lonely/You can always go downtown.”

The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown
Things will be great when you’re downtown
No finer place for sure, downtown
Everything’s waiting for you.
Along with a low bend to the ground upon every downtown. Can you hear it? Or am I the only one? That song will forever be synonymous with roller skating for me.
A Journey of Joy and Discovery
It’s that squeal of delight as the feeling of joy and playing rises up within us. As adults, we sometimes get so ingrained and bogged down with the hustle and bustle that we forget the importance of sometimes just playing. Like a much-loved child. We need to play, to celebrate, to tap into that child within us sometimes.
We need to keep dreaming and keep our ability to dream alive. Within each of us is still that little child that sometimes can teach us a thing or two and even reveal distant and hidden memories. To pull us back into imagination, into dreaming, so that we can go even further, define what we want our life to look like, what we want in life, and who we want to be, and be inspired to go after it with creativity, strategy, clarity, and vision.

In roller skating, we go round and round. It reminds me that we’re always going round and round on this planet – on its axis, on its orbit around the sun, while the moon circles roundabout us, and in our circumstances. With each step, we move forward. Even if we feel like we’re just going in circles – we’re moving forward.
And all the little steps culminate into the big thing – THE Victory – the milestone – the new chapter. And we must celebrate the small things. Each one of those steps is a victory. No matter how tiny it is. Each step is progress; even those moments that you’re crawling and trying to get back up onto your skates, smooth sailing and the mountain tops again.
Embracing Life's Journey
We must celebrate not only big victories, but the little victories too. We need to celebrate our gifts and talents and the movement we’ve made; it’s essential. When you do this, before you know it, you’re there – living your dream, your desire, your hope.
We need to have those memorials of what the Creator has done for us and what we have overcome. And we need to celebrate those around us when they have their victories. We rejoice with those who rejoice. We encourage them, build them up, and instill even more confidence in them. Remind them that we believe in them and are proud of who they are and what they’ve accomplished.

While sometimes we get tired of going round and round the mountain and desperately wanting a breakthrough, the round is actually a good thing. We get completion, a protected space around us where we’re covered on all sides. We get the beautiful seasons (even though here in Florida, we have a much more softened distinction of them). We get to enjoy the beautiful sunrises and sunsets each day and rest for our bodies at night. We have a natural clock that keeps track of minutes and hours, days and years, and seasons for us. Do we have anyone here who lives for the seasons, is an ocean lover, or a stargazer? The crunch of leaves, the beautiful trek of birds flying south, the pictures drawn in the stars in the sky, the beautiful colors painted in midair in the cold, icy, northern landscape. Dancing in a burst of rain or just enjoying the smell of it.
The Dance of Life
Catching snowflakes on our tongue in winter; seeing the new growth come up out of the newly melted snow. The exposure of tidepools and access to Mont Saint-Michel when the tide is out. Surfing the pipeline on the perfect circular wave; feeling them gently crash against your body or propel you softly on a watery ride. The feeling of g-forces when we’re spinning quickly or on a roller coaster.
The magnificent pinks, oranges, reds, and golden hour of the sun, and being able to see both the sunrise and the sunset on the same day. The fragrant, vibrant flowers and plants that breathe and blow gently in the flow of the air circulating throughout our planet. The perfect balance of all systems of life. So many beautiful things that we get from our Earth spinning round and round.

And in our personal round and round, roller skating, spinning and dance of life, we get maturity; increased understanding and wisdom; deeper intimacy and more united relationships; greater strength and perseverance; wholeness and safety; the warmth of someone’s arms wrapped around us and embracing us in a circle of empathy and compassion, love and passion.
The joyful bubbling up of butterflies in our stomach as we spin and dance the night away. An infinite number of possibilities. It’s a constant reminder that our Creator still has his breath flowing and moving throughout the Earth and keeping it all together. Throughout the universe. Even every planet and every star rotates. There is purpose in the rotation. Purpose in the circle and of going round and round again.
Like a spiral. With each step, we get to choose if we’re going to spiral up or spiral down in our circular path. We get to choose how we’re going to see it – opportunities and lessons learned, or failure and condemnation. And just like an onion, we get to another layer, another level, another milestone.

The Harmony of Numbers
Now, numbers mean things. The universe was designed and created using mathematical laws and principles that govern the entire universe. The golden ratio is found in the human body, in galaxies, in seashells, and in leaves and seeds. We have the Fibonacci sequence of petals and pinecones; symmetry of butterflies, jellyfish and other animals; fractal patterns of snowflakes, coastlines, lightning strikes and clouds; or the hexagonal pattern of the bee’s honeycomb.
And very specific meanings for every number. For instance, the number 7 is the number of completeness and perfection. 8 – a new beginning. 10 – testimony, law, responsibility, and the completeness of order. 40 – the number of testing and trial.

A Milestone Celebration
And here’s for you AVESSA – the 5th year of the publication going into the year of ’25. The number 5 is the number of grace. And number 25 is a multiplication of this (5 x 5). The number 25, meaning grace upon grace. Redemption and grace multiplied.
So, to Flávio, our Editor-in-Chief, who’s at the helm, spearheading this fantastic publication and outstanding team – many congratulations to you! Hats off to you for always casting your vision and leading us all in this beautiful, creative compilation of ideas, fantasies, and realities.
