With a professional background like Antonina Belinska’s, the daring and bold journey of launching a fashion brand with its own character might seem easy, something she probably never expected, as fear, unfortunately, tends to overshadow reality.
Belinska took her first firm steps into fashion when she began building a career in film costume design, a path to which she has devoted most of her professional path. It was not until 2023 that, with all the courage and determination required, she launched TONiA, a brand dedicated to the admiration and consequent creation of garments that perfectly encapsulate her own story, the history of fashion, and, of course, contemporary trends.
History Woven Into Modernity
Now, at Ukrainian Fashion Week, Belinska and her team presented a collection with such historical and cultural weight that it would take us days to process and understand it at the same level as its creators. To begin clarifying this, it should be noted that between 1530 and 1610, Mannerism emerged in Europe as a reaction to the balance of the High Renaissance, an artistic style characterized by the use of more intricate forms, more opulent images, new materials, and an undeniable emphasis on drapery and layering in clothing.

To achieve a proper adaptation of history into the design of this collection, Belinska worked with a moodboard that included the sophisticated Family Portrait by Bernardino Licinio (Galleria Borghese, Rome), engravings depicting women of different social classes in Venice from Habitus variarum orbis gentium by Abraham de Bruyn, as well as genre scenes by the Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp, particularly Scene on the Ice, where clothing is shown in motion.

To ensure the collection had undeniable coherence, the designer paid special attention to accessories and jewelry depicted in ceremonial portraits of European monarchs. This translated into runway looks complemented by gloves, bows, pendants, brooches, bracelets, and necklaces created in collaboration with the jewelry house Золота Країна.
The color palette of the collection ranges from restrained blacks, browns, and greys to refined greens, sky blue, and soft pink. As a vibrant accent, Belinska introduces carrot-colored ribbons, a detail inspired by Avercamp’s painting.
