Tick…tock…tick…tock… that all too familiar sound and internal feeling of the clock of time as it moves steadily forward, clicking down the moments of life. Oh, the ever-present rolling of time that keeps rolling on moment by moment for all eternity. The world rushing to and fro frantically in pursuit, in the hustle, in the craving, and attempts to grip onto success, security, stability, and power in an environment of an ever-increasing speed that only accelerates time even more.
Time. It’s our most valuable commodity that we wish we could get our hands around and control. It’s this constant quiet voice that pulls at us, that slips away from us so easily. But then – time stood still. Those are words that we want to hear, to experience at moments. With the world rushing by like star trails, sometimes we just want it to stop. To be able to just hit pause, to just be…to be still in the quiet – in the peace where we can release and breathe easily. To enjoy the moment while the world spins on in this constant, frantic, and intensified pace. To never leave that euphoric and beautiful point in time that gets etched in our memory.
And then of course we have our beautiful skin and bodies. The natural aging process, the weight of gravity, and our choices on our bodies. No one wants to grow old. The harsh consequences show up in our daily lives, as we look in the mirror to see our face gradually drooping. Suddenly, one day, creases and lines appear on our faces, and we find ourselves saying, “Where did these come from? How did this show up?” To step on the scale and see the numbers tick up. Waking up in the morning with new aches and finding it harder to move our bodies than in our days of youth. Oh, the sweetness of youth.
We’re all on that quest for timelessness, searching for that magic elixir, the Fountain of Youth, to make time stop and to reverse time for our skin and bodies. As one in the fashion industry, this is all too familiar. To look timeless wearing the most exclusive pieces and make that fashion moment, to be the best dressed and the “perfect” person. And simultaneously on the design side of fashion, to create pieces that will outlast all designs and trends and be that legendary design that marks history. To always be forever in the perfect “prime” of life, and even be immortal.
Now, taking care of our skin and bodies is absolutely crucial. We must do this. However, we can move into dangerous territory with this. The lengths that we’ll go to fill the void, to fill the emptiness, the craving, to quiet those voices – the wrong beliefs that we hold that we are unloved and unlovable, unwanted, or that something is wrong with us or that we’re trash. Thinking “if we just were ______, then we’d have/be _____”. You fill in the blanks. We can go so far down this rabbit hole that we can get to the point of losing ourselves, to where we’ve altered our true selves, where we don’t even recognize ourselves anymore.
It becomes addictive. From a little here and a little there, to bad jobs done that leave us messed up and deformed, starvation, bulimia, and to highly extreme surgeries and procedures, even to the point of removing ribs. This is no new concept. Throughout history, this phenomenon has shown up in many forms. From Chinese foot binding, using lead and arsenic to have pale skin, Japanese teeth blackening, Ethiopian lip plates, skull shaping of the Mayans, elongating necks with the use of coils, and the Victorian corsets and Edwardian-era S-Bend corsets that caused deformed rib cages, as well as bended the spine into unnatural positions, and permanently caused severe organ displacement and compression among other things. As the saying goes – Beauty is pain.
But honestly, how far do you take this? Is it worth the consequences and loss of life, self, and joy? Anything to an extreme is never good. If you’re at an extreme, you’re out of alignment. There are times in life when we must put our foot down and hold our boundaries firmly. And sometimes we must find the middle ground to move out of the trauma, the unhealthy living, the codependency, and to move forward. In order to do so, we must look at the root, our wrong belief systems – the lies. Brushing them under the table, trying to cover them up, doesn’t work. Until these are dealt with, they’ll just show up in another spoke of the web in our lives. So, I’ll repeat it again. What are you holding on to? Do you think that you are unloved? Unloveable? Unwanted? That there’s something wrong with you? That you’re trash? What do you think of when you think of this statement: “if I were just ______, then I would have/be _____”. I know this hurts, and there’s so much pain there. I validate you and what you’ve been through.
While these feelings may still feel so real and raw to you, I’m here to tell and remind you of the truth. No matter what, you are deeply loved. And you are lovable. You are valuable, a masterpiece, just the way you were created before the foundations of the earth. You are wanted. You don’t need to prove to people that you are worthy. You already are full of worth. Don’t listen to the lies that come flying at you every day. Yes, we all have weaknesses that we’re working on. No one is perfect. You are a beautiful creation, and the Creator doesn’t make junk – only masterpieces that no person can ever perfectly recreate. Go to the Source for the real and perfect remedy and healing, who actually did reverse time. Love is waiting for you, even in those moments when you’re in your mess and in the pit.
Caught Between Stillness and Motion
Now, let’s take a look at what would happen to you if time stopped. In the effort of doing this, we must look at the time-space continuum. Stopping time would be halting a fundamental dimension of reality – one that allows for change, motion, and life. The world, the entire universe, would freeze and therefore cease to exist. No atom, no photon, and no energy in anything would be moving. All atomic energy would stop. It would be impossible to breathe, think, or move. It would be utter deep darkness because there would be absolutely no light. The world would go dark as the sun could not shine because light could not travel; your eyesight would also completely stop as your retina could not take in any light. It would be completely silent because sound waves could not move and would cease to vibrate.
Air would become solid. You would be encased in a non-moving block, and you wouldn’t be able to move at all. It would make it impossible to breathe, and you would suffocate. In a fraction of a second, you would instantly be blind, deaf, paralyzed, and suffocating all at the same time. You would completely lose all senses. Heat, which is caused by the movement of atoms, would be frozen, which in turn would plunge you into absolute zero. You would be permanently trapped in this state, in a prison unlike any imaginable. This would be absolutely horrific.
Time was never meant to stand still. Time is meant to move forward continually. It’s held perfectly in balance. The flow of time is what makes life possible; it’s what allows us to exist. Without time, there would be no motion, no change, no light, and therefore no life. Time is not a limitation; it is essential, an absolute. When time slows down, we get bored, anxious, or depressed. If we lean into those quiet, still moments of waiting, that is when we can do our greatest soul searching. Find our greatest freedom, surrender, and release. Our strength and perseverance are fortified, and we gain clarity and direction. We remember the things that are truly important, that truly matter, and we get correctly realigned. It’s a constant balance of using every moment, every second wisely, and pausing to listen and to self-examine and check in with your heart, mind, body, and soul. It’s pausing long enough to savor the moment, while not getting caught up, being frozen, and stopping where we lose momentum, but being grateful for every moment we have, and choosing to spend our moments on the right things, the most important priorities in our lives.
In this pressing of time, where sometimes we’re in a rough patch, we want time to speed up so we can get out of the waiting period and the pain. And before we know it, we’re on the pendulum swinging to the opposite side, where time is racing by, and we’re struggling to keep up with the busyness of life. It’s the seesaw that we find ourselves on – this cycle, this tug of war. Wanting time to speed up and then wanting it to slow down. Wanting it to stop and then wanting to turn back the clock of time and regain it. And yet still at other times, we think we have all the time in the world.
Timelessness Begins With Intentional Living
How will you choose to spend your time? Based on 2023 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the average life span is 78.4 years in the US. Let’s take a 35-year-old person. They’ve already used up 12,775 days. That’s almost half of their life. In this example, this means this person has 2,256.8 weeks left of life. We’ll take it to another level. They work 40 hours per week and get 8 hours of sleep per night. They spend 1.5 hours per day eating and preparing food, 1.5 hours per day grooming, and 2.5 hours of exercise per week. Now, with a week being 168 hours, this leaves 48.5 hours per week to allocate towards activities not listed here. So, for the remaining 43.4 years of this person’s life, they have 4,560 days (that’s 12.49 years) left to use for everything outside of these categories listed.
So, what are you going to do with your precious hours and minutes remaining? What kind of person do you want to be? Who are the most important people in your life? Who do you want to be for your spouse, for your children, your friends, your parents? How do you want to make a greater impact in this life and in the lives of others? How are you going to spend the remaining 48.5 hours not allocated for this week?
You want to squeeze out every drop of time that you can, utilize every single moment. It’s too easy to let time slip through our fingers, where we waste and squander it. To “rule” time and to have that legacy impact timelessness, you must be wise. When you hear the quiet pulling of time, allow the calling to help you live intentionally.
So, I implore you. Choose wisely. Stop scrolling, stop looking at what everyone else is doing. Stop comparing yourself to others to try to be “better” than them, to try to prove your value to others. You’re already valuable. The most delightful and precious thing ever made. Each of us has something so special, something that nobody else has and no one else can do like you. Be settled in that. Know your worth. Focus on the things that truly matter. Focus on your big priorities, not the distractions and little gnats that eat up the time if we let them.
There is only so far that physics can go. There are still questions that physics cannot answer; it always hits a wall. The true test, the gauge, of time and timelessness is eternity. We will all experience timelessness – in eternity, for good or for worse. Which will you choose? Be in the light. Choose and soak in the light. And stay there.
