While looking through the schedule for 080 Barcelona Fashion Week, I was excited to see that Juan VG is featured in this edition. Although I couldn’t be there in person this time, I watched the collection online and I loved it. His latest collection, titled “Jaleo,” takes us on a style journey through the daily life of a “cayetano,” a classic preppy character Juan grew up watching in his hometown of Valladolid.

I first came across Juan VG in 2024 during his show at Madrid’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. His collection immediately caught my eye. The show began with models sitting at school desks, each in their chair, wearing clothes inspired by school uniforms. It was a clever and creative way to bring the idea of school attire to life through fashion. I really admired how much thought he put into his “Gamberrxs” collection.

The Rebellious Prep

This collection stays true to Juan’s rebellious style and his dedication to upcycling. However, it also shows growth. He takes the preppy image he once rejected and rebuilds it with a fresh, mature, and bold twist. The clothes tell a full story from casual morning outfits for running errands or meeting friends for a drink to smart looks for dinners and special events. Classic preppy items like double-breasted blazers, sweaters draped over shoulders, loafers, and even tracksuits are all reimagined with humor and a modern edge.

Juan explains that this collection isn’t about criticizing the preppy style. Instead, it embraces and reshapes it into something personal and free. His work shows that people can change and evolve going from rebel to preppy without losing who they are. For him, clothes should be fun, flexible, and never restrictive.

This collection felt very different from his last show in Madrid. The runway was full of fun, danceable techno music that made you want to move and celebrate. To me, it was a joyful celebration of his journey as a designer. One piece that really stood out was a black coat paired with black shorts, a look that perfectly showed his gender-fluid and equality-focused approach.

Overall, Juan VG is definitely a designer to watch. His ability to mix creativity, personal stories, and inclusivity makes his work truly inspiring.
