Born out of a desire for freedom, of an urge to experience the world with eyes wide open and with as much emotion as possible, brothers Custo and David Dalmau laid the first foundations of Custo Barcelona in 1980. Everything that followed is already part of fashion history. Fame quickly took hold of their designs, and by 1997, the two Catalan brothers, who had dreamed so intensely and so boldly, made their debut at New York Fashion Week. A dream fully realised. Custo became one of the most desired brands among young women, actresses, singers, and celebrities throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Customania” took over all media, platforms, runways, and even the film industry. My mother, in fact, still remembers the newly opened boutique in Barcelona and the thrill of stepping inside to buy something… nostalgia incoming. Today, at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, a more mature and time-seasoned Custo presents a collection that reminds us there is no passage of time, no evolution, that inevitably leads to a loss of excitement.
A Radiant Return to Customania
At Custo, everything is always about colour, fluidity, and the sense of ease that comes from the freedom of not standing still, of not settling, of continuing to move forward, to create, to experiment. “We Own the Light” is a proposal that reclaims light as a symbol of energy, identity, and creative force, positioning it as a raw material for design. The collection unfolds through pieces that move between transparency and opacity.
The looks presented, true to the brand’s DNA, explore architectural sensuality, chromatic contrasts, and experimental textures. Mini dresses in plumetis tulle, puffed sleeves, fluid draping shape silhouettes that feel both powerful and ethereal, alongside dresses that reveal intricate, layered craftsmanship. Lace and patchwork appear in a warm palette of ochres, pinks, and golds. Luminous textures, bold volumes, and a palette that shifts between night and radiance have all come together to build the visual universe of the collection. “We Own the Light” envisions a woman who radiates confidence from within, using fashion as an amplifier of energy and personal expression.
