Coosy x Miguel Palacio says that their collection for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid was an exercise in creating timeless pieces. As an elder millennial and a fashion historian, I have to chuckle a little because this is a collection firmly rooted simultaneously in the 1960s and ’80s in the best possible way.

A Nostalgic Time Warp

Silhouettes are clearly inspired by these two decades, which can at first glance seem like an odd and incongruous pairing. I don’t think many of us would ever think to combine such distinct styles, at least not with any hope of it actually working. This collection manages to straddle that line, however, playing with drape, silhouette, and color.

Many of the pieces show unique draping, falling across the body in soft lines. The pieces that are more structured are quilted in perfect squares, a geometry that contrasts with the soft silk of the other pieces. In particular, a bright yellow leather cape/poncho brings structure and interest to an otherwise mundane ensemble, elevating it into being flat-out striking. (Also, the green clutch bag is absolutely to die for.)

The silhouettes are deceptively simple, but play around with pleating and fit. A bright green satin dress, plain at first glance, uses a thin belt at the waist to create a pleating effect above and below, which allows the satin to really show off its luster. A fold of fabric at the neck keeps the bodice from being plain, too. This is a perfect encapsulation of this collection as a whole: Letting the fabric do the talking via pleating, folding, and stitching.

The color palette is restricted to mostly yellow, green, black, and white, with occasional splashes of blue and green. In particular, an asymmetrical and draped teal and blue polkadot dress and a deep blue blouse with teal green polkadot slacks stand out in this regard. Both pieces are made of an absolutely stunning silk, with the draping creating the most intriguing pleats at the waist and bust.

If I might confess, a white with black polkadots dress stole my heart a little in a very nostalgic way. With its puffed sleeves and dropped waist, I’m pretty sure I had a dress exactly like that as a little girl. This is in no way a slight, as I absolutely loved that dress, and it was a delight to see a collection that was just fun.

Every single piece looked like it was meant for “going somewhere,” no matter where that is. Of course, if you’re wearing the plain white dress with a perfectly rectangular cape sweeping elegantly from the shoulders, that place might be a local goddess convention.
