Claro Couture has accomplished something this season at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid that should be the goal of every fashion house, period, the end. They created a glorious collection that was beautiful, cohesive, and envy-inducing. The outfits represented the designer’s unique and personal lens, offering new ideas for fashion, and at the same time, they were what a fashionista would deeply desire.
Claro Couture has been a prominent force in fashion in Spain for nearly 40 years. Originally founded by Fernando Claro, it now includes his daughter Beatriz Claro as a co-designer. The house is based in Seville with a studio in Madrid and is known for its artisanal, feminine, and one-of-a-kind designs. The brand demonstrates technical expertise in designs that are carefully crafted yet convey a lovely lightness of being, showcasing an elegant, relaxed Mediterranean culture.
Beatriz Claro now represents the brand’s new vision and direction. She has helped the house reinterpret the company’s classic aesthetic with a fresh, contemporary, and refined sensibility.
A Masterclass in Mediterranean Elegance
The new collection is called “Genesis,” which symbolizes an innovative, delicate yet forceful point of view. Beatriz Claro herself stated, “There are collections that are not designed…they are awakened.” Genesis is unexpected in the marriage of formal, structured pieces that still feel light and organic. The embroidery and boucle tweed are frankly fabulous and a definite highlight of the collection. Beatriz also uses subtle beading, fringes, and feathers to add movement and depth to the “Genesis”.
The palette is surprising in its adherence to deep colors such as peach, mango, sunset orange, with bolts of royal blue, olive, and fern. Of course, there is the beloved black and tan, which is foundational to so many designers, but Claro Couture is fearless in its use of color. The collection’s coherence is only reemphasized by the combinations.
Through the lush elegance and rich hues, there was one particular look that caught our eye and remained unforgettable. A pair of flowing, loose-fitting trousers in sherbert peach, paired with a long boucle tweed coat in a deeper mandarin orange, with peeks of red and beige hinted at in the fabric. The coat reached the floor and was asymmetrically embroidered across the chest with blue, pink, and red flowers blossoming along a green vine. The coat had a high collar and hidden closures except for some lovely deep orange glass buttons along the cuffs. It was an outstanding look that showcased the brand’s elegance with a fresh, youthful aspect. Outside of Chanel, Beatriz truly understands how to combine tweed with embellishments that can make one gasp.
Another outfit that delightfully surprised was a jacket and dress combination in a deep and thirsty Mediterranean solid blue. The outfit was so delightfully designed that it eschewed any further embellishment. The jacket had a high collar, sleeves to the forearm, and fell to the hips with a matching belt cinching it to the body. The skirt was quite flirty with a wavy flamenco bottom that fell unevenly from below the knee to the top of the heels. Beatriz was masterful with the structure of this look and provided a playful take on a more traditional suit-dress, making me yearn for more.
In the same Mediterranean blue, a jumpsuit and a long coat in boucle tweed fabric were later presented. It was again very light and fun without the need for any twists; the design stood on its own. As the other dresses, coats, skirts, and pants flowed by, the intelligence of Claro Couture came clear. They created outstanding fabrics, embroidery, and colors, which they reused to great impact.
The future of Claro Couture lies with an intentional transition of leadership and a more assertive focus on international and digital markets. The future now rests with Beatriz Claro, the Creative Director, who has demonstrated a vision that will appeal to a younger, contemporary audience while still maintaining the brand’s elegant aesthetic.
